I’ve worked with a lot of clients through the years, and one of the first questions I ask every time has nothing to do with furniture, paint, or budget.

It’s simply, “How do you want this room to feel?”

Not how you want it to look, but how you want to feel when you walk through the door.

Do you want a sense of calm? A cozy, welcoming space? Or maybe a room that feels a little magical? (That one is usually reserved for my Halloween and Christmas decorating…but we’ll talk more about that another time.)

Whatever feeling you’re hoping to create, ask yourself one more question; “What already in this room gives me that feeling?”

Start there.

This becomes your compass. From that moment on, every piece you consider has to answer one simple question, “Does this support the feeling I want this room to hold?”

It sounds almost too simple, but that one question changes everything.

It keeps us from buying because we’re frustrated that a room doesn’t feel finished. It slows us down when we’re tempted by something beautiful in a showroom that doesn’t really belong in our home.

Most importantly, it keeps us connected to the story we’re trying to tell.

If you want a room to feel calm; begin looking for pieces with soft lines, gentle colors, and quiet textures.

If you want more warmth; layer in natural materials, rich textures, and meaningful objects you’ve collected over time.

If you want a room that feels welcoming; create spaces that invite people to sit down, stay awhile, and make themselves at home.

When every decision begins with a feeling, and you have a clear vision of what you’re trying to create, decorating becomes less about adding more things and more about choosing with intention.

And then somehow… every decision becomes a little easier.

I still believe the most beautiful homes aren’t the ones filled with the most things, but the ones where every piece quietly supports the feeling of the space while telling the story of the people who live there.

So, before you go…

Think about this – Before anything comes home with you, pause and consider, “Does this support the feeling I’m trying to create.” You might be surprised how much easier the answer makes every other decision.
